Might delete later, but here goes.
If your preferred party or candidate loses an election, that sucks. However, it does happen, and will happen around fifty percent of the time in politics. That’s basically what democracy is. If you’re Gen Y or Z, and you’ve got it in your head that the “good guys always win,” that’s probably because you’ve had decades of smooth sailing under Biden, Obama, and Clinton, and forty years of carefully manipulated, artificially low interest rates. But that’s not reality. This is what losing feels like, regardless of what side you’re on. It sucks, and it’s scary.
You might be worried that some ultra-racist, Trumpian gestapo is going to kick down your door and take everything away from you. A nightmare scenario you lose sleep over. It probably won’t come to that. There, that’s my prediction on record so I’ll have to live with it.
To quote the philosopher, Nassim Taleb:
“I woke up with a disturbing thought: with Kamala there is a near-certainty of more wars coupled with a lot of bullshit about ‘peace’ initiatives. With Trump … there is a possibility of peace coupled with loud sabre rattling.”
The Trump/Vance people want to make their country just as great as the other team, they just have different ideas on what that looks like. Some of them might work.
But what do I know? It could very well be that you guys really are on track to a four-year fascist dystopia. Maybe, just maybe, instead of hoping and praying that the worst doesn’t happen, that Trump won’t literally catapult immigrants back over the border, or appoint Kid Rock as the music czar, consider that this is the time to work on reducing the size and scope of government, to the point where it’s not this intrusive, monolithic entity, instead of waiting for whoever holds office to just legislate your problems away? Because this is what it feels like when someone you don’t agree with has all that power. It sucks, and it’s downright terrifying.
In a constitutional federal republic, it’s not just a possibility that someone in charge will have values incompatible with yours, it’s basically a foregone conclusion. It will feel awful, and it won’t get any easier.
And stop with all this “Unfriend me” shit, you fucking soy boys. Your team lost, try again next time.
Should have made more TikTok videos. You totally would have won then.
Amor fati.
