I got a Line 6 Helix recently, something I swore I would never do. It’s lighter, cheaper and far less maintenance than a tube amp, so of course I would. If I were a touring musician, I’d probably get the Rack version. The generations of musicians that are just finding their feet are choosing digital modellers over tube amplifiers. The Neural DSP Quad Cortex, HeadRush, BOSS GT-1000, just to name a few. It’s not just because they’re apartment-dwellers, it’s because it’s the practical solution in most contexts. I don’t think digital appeals to just bedroom players anymore.
You can use the Helix in so many different configurations. Whether it be with an amp using the four-cable method, or as a standalone modelling unit, run it through the venue’s PA system, etc. The possibilities really are endless like they say. And the more I think about it, I realise I have no real preference for analogue or digital when it comes to reverb, delay, modulation, or pitch effects. The HX Edit software gives you even more control over your presets, and allows you to back them up. You can even integrate third-party impulse responses. It’s like Line 6 knew guitarists would have their preferred IRs already, so they figured they’d attract more players by making integration as seamless as possible. Of course, whether you prefer third-party IRs to those of the Helix is a matter or taste.
As a person who is only just scratching the surface of amp modelling, I have to ask (something I should have asked the seller, who was super cool and probably the best I’ve worked with): What do I need to know? What are the best IRs out there? What are some of the best shortcuts? Underrated tips, etc?
